NTEU
goes to D.C.
"Our Union [NTEU] Our Voice" was the
motto of this year's outstanding annual NTEU
National Legislative Conference that was held
March 3, 2008. As usual, it was hosted in our
nation's capital, Washington, D.C. Senator Jim
Webb of Virginia, who has a 100% voting record on
NTEU issues, was the opening speaker and
delivered an optimistic message. Just to give
you his impending view on a few shared goals he
is in support of a War Accountability Bill, fair
pay and Agency funding, improving health care
benefits, closure to the A-76 scheme, 8 weeks of
paid maternity leave, increasing minimum wage,
reduced elderly health care, Homeland Security
and Retiree issues. Another key problem he is
dedicated to is the restoration of Executive
Order 12871, which was established, October 1,
1993 to foster and enhance labor-management
partnerships in the federal government. This
E.O. was actually rescinded by George W. Bush 2
weeks after he assumed office.
Over 350 NTEU members from 20 agencies and 40
states attended to lobby Congress (Senators,
Representatives and their staffs). We canvassed
Capitol Hill with a focus on the following six
Legislative goals:
- Labor-Management
Partnerships in the Federal Government;
- Federal
pay including pay parity and 2.9%
increase for 2009, and continued
opposition to Pay-for Performance;
- Adequate
agency funding and opposition to
privatization of federal jobs, including
an end to private tax collection;
- Federal
Employee Health Benefits including
opposition to Health Savings Accounts,
support for an increase in the level of
government contributions under FEHB, a
government contribution for dental and
vision, and paid
