NTEU goes to D.C.

"Our Union [NTEU] Our Voice" was the motto of this year's outstanding annual NTEU National Legislative Conference that was held March 3, 2008.  As usual, it was hosted in our nation's capital, Washington, D.C.  Senator Jim Webb of Virginia, who has a 100% voting record on NTEU issues, was the opening speaker and delivered an optimistic message.  Just to give you his impending view on a few shared goals he is in support of a War Accountability Bill, fair pay and Agency funding, improving health care benefits, closure to the A-76 scheme, 8 weeks of paid maternity leave, increasing minimum wage, reduced elderly health care, Homeland Security and Retiree issues.  Another key problem he is dedicated to is the restoration of Executive Order 12871, which was established, October 1, 1993 to foster and enhance labor-management partnerships in the federal government.  This E.O. was actually rescinded by George W. Bush 2 weeks after he assumed office.

Over 350 NTEU members from 20 agencies and 40 states attended to lobby Congress (Senators, Representatives and their staffs).  We canvassed Capitol Hill with a focus on the following six Legislative goals:

  1. Labor-Management Partnerships in the Federal Government;
  1. Federal pay including pay parity and 2.9% increase for 2009, and continued opposition to Pay-for Performance;
  1. Adequate agency funding and opposition to privatization of federal jobs, including an end to private tax collection;
  1. Federal Employee Health Benefits including opposition to Health Savings Accounts, support for an increase in the level of government contributions under FEHB, a government contribution for dental and vision, and paid
